A Prayer for the Eighteenth Day of Easter

Resurrection and the life,

When the disciples on the road to Emmaus extended hospitality to the stranger, they were following in your teaching to love the neighbor; they were participating in your kingdom that shows radical welcome to the outsider.   At the table with a stranger, the disciples received a glimpse of your Risen glory. Help me to see your face – as strange as it may seem – in those who I do not know. Empower me to extend genuine welcome and compassion to those who are on the outskirts, beyond my familiarity.   A greeting, perhaps, or maybe a smile – knowing that I am smiling and greeting in your direction.

Through Christ, Amen.
