In this sermon, based on Matthew 5:38-48, I explore Jesus' hard teaching of loving our enemies. February 19 is the 75th anniversary of President FDR's executive order 9066, which set the groundwork for the imprisonment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry. Motivated by fear and racism, the US government did this without due process or any formal charges - a breakdown of American democracy. In the Sermon on the Mount, which we have been reading through during this Epiphany season, Jesus invites his hearers to define 'neighbors' and those who we should love in broad terms. The reason? God loves with agape (divine, redemptive love). Followers are called to imitate this agape and 'be perfect.' For a definition of 'perfect,' you'll have to listen.
