Advent Day One: Sunday December 3 - Approaching the Threshold

In the high deserts of New Mexico, there is an ancient city called Chaco.  Although its inhabitants have long since migrated away, leaving their DNA to the indigenous people of the southwest, a record of their remarkable civilizations remains in the massive ruins that remain.  A few years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to this remote place and experience its wonders.  Standing out for me is the doorways and windows of rooms that open to the sky.  In times long ago, these portals led to storage rooms containing ceremonial items and supplies needed to support the thousands of people that gathered for festivals and rituals.  These thresholds provided access and light.

This Advent, these thresholds will provide the spiritual imagination for a daily devotional.  The uncertainty, division, and unsettled nature of our times calls out for the shalom and communion that God alone can provide.  The church finds itself at a threshold moment.  Our structures, practices, and thinking - though they might have served us well in the past - need to be carefully examined in light of the gospel of Jesus Christ and whether or not they will continue to serve Christ’s mission in the future.  Just ‘going to church’ doesn’t seem to be a priority in our culture these days.  In the absence of cultural supports and encouragement, individually there needs to be a deeper spiritual engagement with our faith.  People of faith need to reprioritize their commitment to God and neighbor.

Advent preparation is about more than getting ready for Christmas.  Instead of elaborate countdowns and lists of ‘things to do,’ the season of Advent is about preparing our heart for Christ.  We yearn for God’s action and life to enter our own.  We yearn to move from a place of brokenness and fear to a place of restoration and hope.  We yearn to be more whole and centered.   With a deep and holy breath, It is time for us to approach the threshold of this Advent season.

Silent Prayer

Throughout the season of Advent, we will build up our capacity for silent prayer.  Instead of words, we focus on breathing and clearing our mind in silent prayer.  With an open heart, we make ourselves available to listen to God. Each day, we will add more time for our centering prayer.  As the world around us gets crazier and more hurried – we sit in silence and push busy thoughts aside.

Find a comfortable place to sit.  Set your phone or watch for one minute.  Close your eyes.  Breathe deeply.  As thoughts come to your mind – push them aside.  Now is not the time.  Trust in God to hold your life without needing to control it with our thoughts or actions.  At the end of your time – say a simple “thank you” or “Amen.”   Tomorrow, we will build on this spiritual practice by adding more time.  Consider the time spent in silent prayer as an Advent gift – an opportunity to enter into God’s shalom/peace.

Scripture:

Isaiah 41: 9b-10

9you whom I took from the ends of the earth,
 and called from its farthest corners,
 saying to you, "You are my servant,
 I have chosen you and not cast you off ";
 10do not fear, for I am with you,
 do not be afraid, for I am your God;
 I will strengthen you, I will help you,
 I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
