Do you find yourself needing a little lift? Lord knows that there are a bunch of things that can pull us down. The Covid-19 pandemic has created a host of worries, loss, and anxieties. The virus has caused much suffering throughout the world. Routines, celebrations, employment, and social gatherings have all been disrupted. It might feel like we have sunk into a valley of despair.
The global health crisis isn't the only challenge that we face. As a nation, we are torn by severe political and cultural divisions. With its targeted messages to like-minded folks, social media has fanned the flames of dissent within families, churches, and communities. Working for common solutions has become a rare occurrence in a hotly contentious environment. As a result, we find ourselves unable to address racism, poverty, immigration, and issues around security.
In addition to these things, there are other concerns of a more personal nature. We can face health issues or watch as a loved one struggles with illness. Fear can rear its ugly head as we worry about job security, economic downturns, and our safety. It is all too easy to be overwhelmed and filled with despair.
At times of struggle, the book of Psalms has been an invaluable resource for people of faith. These ancient hymns come from the depths of human experience. They acknowledge the breadth of human emotions in a way that is timeless.
Thankfully, these songs of faith don't leave us in the pit. Trusting in God's presence and power, they reach upward. This is particularly true with the Songs of Ascent. Pilgrims sang these songs as they headed to the holy city of Jerusalem. It was a dangerous and rough path that was filled with many challenges. We will listen to the echoes of their faith, we seek wisdom for our travel through our own trials and tribulations.
With the Songs of Ascent as a scriptural background, I share stories from my travels to five destinations where I found my spirit soar. I will share insights and learning from Chimney Rock, the Redwood Forest, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Jasper. Each story invites a looking up and encourages moving onward.
Onward & Upward; An Odyssey of Ascent is a five-week, daily devotional series filled with scripture, inspiring travel stories, and prayers. Each day you will receive inspiration delivered to your inbox in time for your morning coffee. It is my intent that this series will lift your spirits and shine a little light on your path.
In Christ’s Light,
Walt
